May 2021 Youth Mental Health & Well-Being Virtual Celebration

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the first week in May is dedicated to celebrating children and youth mental health well-being. Historically, organizations like the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health select a day and a theme within the first full week in May to observe as “National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.

The County of San Diego began celebrating children’s mental health well-being according to the SAMHSA theme in 2015. Since 2017, NAMI San Diego’s Children, Youth and Family Liaison has led the local children and youth mental health well-being celebration efforts. The event provides opportunities to celebrate mental health well-being through different ways of community engagement and art expression. The annual celebration is an opportunity for collaboration and outreach to the families of San Diego county.

Art Project 2021:I AM….”

Time to “flip the script” on mental health! We are more than our diagnoses and conditions. We define ourselves. This project is about embracing all our positive and resilient traits that we demonstrate.

Consider the following when thinking about your “I AM….” statements:

  • What words express who you are?
  • How would you describe yourself?

Instruction for Art Project:

  • Select words to answer the statement: “I AM….”
  • Arrange those words together around a central “I AM….”
    • This can be done with chalk on a sidewalk, on a piece of paper, on a whiteboard, however you would like!
  • Example: “I AM….” wrote out on your driveway with “Resilient”, “Strong”, “Funny”, “Brave”, “Smart”, etc. surrounding it in a beautiful array of different colors!
  • Take a picture or grab a scan of your “I AM…” statement art and submit it to NAMI San Diego!

Video Project 2021:What I Wish Others Knew”

Video Project 2021:How My Pet Helps Me”

Animals can have such an impact on our mental health. We want to show all the ways our pets give us strength and support when we need it most. With this piece, video submissions will be edited together to display how our pets help us!

Instructions: In one minute or less, introduce your pet and share how they improve your mental health. Please film these videos in horizontal format. You will then submit your video clips to NAMI San Diego by emailing them to

Example: “During quarantine, my dog Freda keeps me on a regular schedule since I have to walk and feed her at certain times. Having a set schedule and something consistent everyday as helped me feel more normal and gives me a reason to get up every morning”.
